Umtata, now known as Mthatha, is a beautiful city on the banks of Mthata River in Eastern Cape of South Africa. The main town of the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality is a hot favourite among business and leisure travellers and presence of an international airport is further facilitating tourists arrival. This former capital of Tanskei may not be as bustling as Johannesburg or as picturesque as Cape Town but good enough to engage travellers for a day or two. Once you arrive here you would have excellent means to get around in the city but hiring a car would enable you see different draw cards of the city.

The museum which is housed in a colonial building takes you through journey of life of Nelson Mandela. There are various other things related to the life of the president on exhibit. There are some good reserves in Umtata which allows you to come close to nature. Luchaba Nature Reserve which is situated close to Mthatha Dam consists of vast grassland is an ideal place to see several local and exotic birds in their natural setting. Hluleka Nature Reserve situated southeast of Mthatha is well known for its rugged landscape. Dwesa & Cwebe Nature Reserve which is situated at a short drive from the city is home to a large number of bird and animal species. Coffee Bay which is situated at a short drive from Umtata is one of the most picturesque towns on Willdcoast that deserves a visit.
