Top thing to do in Hamburg while on a city break

Travellers from around the world find Hamburg an ideal destination as this biggest port city in Germany has welcomed merchants, traders, sailors and leisure travellers from centuries. Perhaps it why, when locals call their city "the gateway to the world”; people don’t blame them for being too proud. And the city has great infrastructure to host its guests that includes hotels, restaurants, bars and plethora of options for entertainment. This one of the wealthiest cities in Germany has welcomed tourists with varying inclination for the ages and its charm has not faded with the passage of time. Hamburg city breaks are highly popular among the UK based travellers as it allows them to have some rejuvenating moments without meddling with their work schedule.

St Michaeliskirche

Situated northeast of the landing piers, the St Michaeliskirche, or ‘Der Michel’ is one of the most popular landmarks and largest Protestant baroque church in north Germany. The visitors can take a lift to the top of the tower that offers panoramic view of the city. You can also see an exhibit related to city’s history. Its 132 meter spire fully covered with copper shapes city’s skyline.

Miniatur-Wunderland

It is hard to find a critic of the Miniatur-Wunderland as it is planned to perfection and thus giving ample opportunity to travellers to tickle their senses. You kids will get amazed to see sights of the model trains traversing through Alps and miniature A380 taking off and landing at the model of Hamburg's airport. The wonderland spread over 1300 sq metre is full of fun and adventure and thus attracts a large number of visitors on weekends. The tourists should book their tickets well in advance to avoid long queues.

Hamburger Kunsthalle

Hamburger Kunsthalle is spread over two blocks old and new and joined by an underground passage. The main building of this museum showcases 20th-century classics that include works of Klee and Kokoschka. Its white building named the Galerie der Gegenwart exhibits works of German artists like Rebecca Horn, Georg Baselitz and Gerhard Richter among others. The museum is a must visit attraction for art lovers.

Internationales Maritimes Museum

Being a port city Hamburg boasts of an impressive maritime history and there can’t be a better place to spot it then Internationales Maritimes Museum. The museum spread over 10 floors gives an interesting insight into the city’s beautiful maritime past. The museum boasts of 26,000 model ships, 50,000 construction plans, 5000 illustrations, 2000 films and1.5 million photographs among other things.

Alster Lakes

The lakes of the Binnenalster (Inner Alster) and Aussenalster (Outer Alster) impart Hamburg an incredible view. The two lakes converge at the Lombardsbrücke and Kennedybrücke (Lombard and Kennedy bridges). The lakes give ideal cruising and boating experience to travellers.

Rathaus

One of the most impressive government buildings in the city Rathaus houses Senate (State Government) and Bürgerschaft (Parliament). The building looks great with its 647 rooms and an imposing clock tower. This one of the most prominent buildings in the city got severely damaged during World War II, but restored to its former glory. The building is highly popular among travellers who often stop here for photographs.

Apart from these the city is home to good fine dining restaurants, bars and nightlife hub of Reeperbahn that pulsates with energy round the clock.
