Major Cultural Attractions in Beijing

The identity of Beijing is not limited to being the capital of Peoples Republic of China as this Asian city is also a cultural powerhouse that you will love to explore. So if your interest lies in dancing, art, music or museum then Beijing has enough attractions to engage you for long.

798 Art District

Dashanzi Art District also known as 798 Art District has a high concentration of art galleries. The area is frequented by art lovers. Spread over an area of 0.6 square km it is an exhibition ground of Chinese culture and art. BTAP, UCCA and Galleria Continua are major attractions.

National Art Museum of China (NAMOC)

Beijing has enough attractions for vacationers with interest in art and culture and National Art Museum of China is one among them. Started by Chairman Mao in 1963 to exhibit modern Chinese art this museum is now an ideal place to see traditional Chinese ink, wash paintings, socialist-themed things which are characteristics of communist party.

Tea ceremony

Tea is an integral part of day to life in China and no trip of Beijing is said to be complete unless you will go through a tea ceremony. The sights of scholars and educated youth debating over tea are very common. If you are invited to a private home then you will understand the tea culture better. Else, you can go to a tea house where you will go through the rituals step-by-step. Beware of fraudsters or you will be slapped with a hefty bill.

Kung fu

Kung fu is a blanket term for many forms of martial art. And seeing Shaolin-trained monks performing this art is an experience in itself. You will see impressive stunts in its various styles. The Legend of Kung Fu at the Red Theatre would be a great place to see performances.

Peking opera

The culture buffs should not miss a visit to Peking opera which is an eclectic melange of music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics. The performance appears serious but the experience will be itched in your memory for long.

Ballroom dancing

Being the capital of a large country, Beijing is bestowed with several cultural aspects and ballroom dancing is one among them. Every night couple of certain age comes to open space to practice ballroom dancing. The performance is great to watch and you can also be a part of it. North Gate of the Workers' Stadium on Gongti Bei Lu and the south end of Houhai are best places to watch this performance.

Kite flying

Unlike major cities of the world Beijing seems at leisure; sights of people playing playing mahjong and walking leisurely at parks are very common. Kite flying is favourite pensioners’ pastime and on a windy day you can see sky littered with kites. You can also take part in this fun activity.
