Luanda - A small city with wealth of historical attractions

Luanda the capital of Angola is beautifully situated on Atlantic Coast. The city is home to impoverish population except certain elite localities. And on their visit to Angolan capital, the guests can see luxury cars in the heart of the city and people living in extreme poverty on the outskirts. Despite its flaws, the city attracts a large number of visitors due to its several sights and seafront location. The country which got independence from Portugal in 1975 has miles to go but its capital is still able to cater to tourists with its myriad offerings. Here we turn spotlight on major attractions of the city.
National Museum of Anthropology
Want to know about the history and culture of Angola? Then there is no better place to do that than National Museum of Anthropology. The museum offers a plethora of artefacts that include traditional masks along with art, sculptures, tools, weaponry, jewellery, clothing, and musical instruments.
Palacio de Ferro
If seeing architectural marvels is your cup of tea then visiting Palacio de Ferro could be an ideal choice. The palace designed by Frenchman Gustave Eiffel (of Eiffel Tower fame) in the 1890s for the Paris Universal Exhibition. The structure was dismantled and brought to Angolan capital in 1902.
Igreja Nossa Senhora do Pópulo
Igreja Nossa Senhora do Pópulo is one of the most popular historical cultural and religious sites in Luanda. The current building was built in 1482. Apart from its religious importance, the church is well known for its Baroque architecture and the beautiful interiors.
National Museum of Slavery
Stationed in the area where the slaves were kept before being deported to Americas, National Museum of Slavery is one of the most visited attractions in the city. During their visit to museum you will see chapel and cannons outside. There are several period objects on display giving you an insight into the past.
National Museum of Natural History
National Museum of Natural History gives an insight into the animal history of the region. Artefacts related to thousands of animals, fish, birds, crustaceons, and insects are on display. The artefacts related to endangered, and extinct animals are also on display. The museum gives a glimpse of diverse animal life of the country.
Fortaleza de São Pedro da Barra
The fortress has served in various capacities. Built in 17th century to protect the area from invaders, the fortress was used for holding slaves before they were deported. During the freedom struggle of Angola the fortress was used as a prison for nationalists.
