Lagos is bustling yet attractive

One of the largest cities in Africa, Lagos is bursting with population but it doesn’t diminish its importance as a tourist destination. This economic and cultural powerhouse of the country has served as a Yoruba port, a British political centre and, capital of Nigeria before it lost the crown to Abuja. Travel experts may frown upon its large population and great traffic but no one can denounce its arts and music potentials. So if you are flying to Nigeria then plan a visit to Lagos where you will find several things to explore.

Nike Art Gallery

Nike Art Gallery, which is run by famous Nigerian artist Nike Davies-Okundaye, is replete with contemporary and traditional Nigerian arts. The artist herself has a great love for art and beauty that you will find during your visit to this four-storey space. The gallery also organises cultural tours to other Yoruba towns.

Kalakuta Republic Museum

The former residence of legendary musician Fela Kuti's former house and revolutionary headquarters has now been converted into a fascinating museum. Several things related to Fela's personal life are on display.

National Museum

National Museum looks beautiful with its several artefacts giving an insight into the history and culture of the region. The most famous attractions here are the brasses from Benin City, Carved ivory and a royal host of crowns. The museum also houses an unfortunate symbol, a bullet-riddled car in which Murtala Mohammed was assassinated in 1976. A craft centre is also situated at museum from where you can buy batik cloth, woodcarvings and textiles.

Beaches

The city of Lagos is also home to several spectacular beaches and Elegushi Beach and Eleko Beach are popular among them. Dancing and parties are held at Elegushi Beach on a Sunday night. Go there with a local as there are certain cases of robbery have been reported. Eleko Beach is another popular beach among Lagosians. There are huts on the beach that you can rent for the day and do your own things. There is a small market nearby sells interesting art products.

Lekki Conservation Centre

If you want to see wildlife of the region then there is no better place to do it then Lekki Conservation Centre run by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation. The place has a tract of wetlands marked for wildlife viewing. The center has excellent facilities to see the animals in their natural setting. Monkeys, crocodiles and several species of birds are found here.
