Mawazine-The Rhythms of the World
By Carlton Leisure - 15 May 2014
Started in 2001, as a part of a cultural initiative to promote a more liberal and tolerant image of Morocco than its most Middle Eastern counterparts Mawazine is turning into a celebration of traditional and contemporary Arab music. The festival has expanded its musical scope with each passing year and has become the most buzz-worthy concert series in the world.
Held on eight stages around the town, Mawazine takes over Morocco’s capital city Rabat for its eight day run from 30th May to 7th June 2014. Organized and largely funded by Maroc-Cultures, a cultural foundation now headed by Mounir Majidi, personal secretary to Morocco’s king Mohammed VI, the festival is becoming synonymous with Mococcan modernism. Each year more and more Moroccan artists join the line-up to represent their country for global audiences and expanded its musical scope.
Opening and closing acts are to be performed by the internationally famous artists but the bulk of the festival highlights the artists who are best known in their respective countries. There are several direct flights to reach Rabat and most international visitors will fly into Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) and from here can get the trains to reach the Rabat’s main station, the Gare Rabat Ville.
